How to manage CA studies with articleship ?

Hi Student ! First of all, kudos to your willpower and determination to start preparing for your exams along with work. You have already reached step 1!

We at ArivuPro aim to give you a detailed article, incorporating all aspects of this topic. So put on your seatbelts and sit tight. Don’t forget to read our quick tips and tricks towards the end of the article!

Now, what should be your Step 2? Be it CA Intermediate or CA Final exams, make a list of all the subjects you intend to write within the stipulated time frame.

Let’s start from one group of

CA Intermediate exam prep (for those of you who’ve already cleared this stage, feel free to skip to the next section!)

You shall have 4 papers to write and let’s say you have roughly 4 months to prepare until the next attempt. Bear with us, because what you see next is not going to be a pleasant time schedule, but it’s very important to give your maximum effort in order to move with the articleship wave into CA Finals.

Goal: To finish 4 subjects in 3 months’ time, leaving 1 month for revision.

Time

To-do

5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Theory subject (record yourself while studying)

7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Practical subject

7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Morning routines and getting ready for office

9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Work

7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Light Dinner

7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Practical subject

9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Theory subject (record yourself while studying)

 Approach:

·         Combine 1 practical and 1 theory subject per day to avoid overload of information processed by your brain. Ideally, we would suggest you to take the following duo combinations:

a.       Accounting + Corporate and other laws

b.       Cost and Management Accounting + Taxation

c.       Advanced Accounting + Auditing and Assurance

d.       EIS and SM + FM and Economics

·         Keep 20 days each per subject

·         The self-recordings of your theory subject can be utilised while travelling, doing chores or even before you go to bed to help you retain it in your memory.

·         During the 1 month of revision time – Take a similar practical and theory duo approach, this time allotting 2 weeks each for each duo.

CA Final exam prep

For the benefit of the majority reading this blog, we’re going to assume you were giving your 100% at work so far and you’re well into 9-12 months of articleship already and are going to start your exam prep for both groups of CA Final.

So, this leaves us with approximately 1.5 years for the prep (including study leave).

First let’s talk about the 1 year before your study leave starts.

Goal 1: To have full coverage of all 8 subjects before starting study leave

Time

To-do

5 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

The Practical subject (or theory subject)

7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Morning routines and getting ready for office

9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Work

7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Light Dinner

7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Practical subject (or theory subject)

Approach during the 1 year before study leave starts:

·         Ideally, we would suggest you to start with practical subjects like SFM, Cost or Financial reporting as these come with minimum amendments. Keep the theory subjects like tax and law towards the end because these come with a lot of amendments.

·         Keep 45 days (1 ½ months) for the first time, in-depth learning of each subject. This way, you will be able to finish 8 subjects in 12 months’ time.

·         Make it a habit to make personalised short notes – this will surely come in handy during revision time.

·         Keep in mind to put in extra hours of studying during weekends since you’re most likely to have an off.

·         The self-recordings of your theory subject can be utilised while travelling, doing chores or even before you go to bed to help you retain it in your memory.

Goal 2: To have effective revision of all 8 subjects during study leave.

Time

To-do

5 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Theory subject

7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Breakfast

8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Practical subject

11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Leisure

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Theory subject

1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Lunch

2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Power nap

3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Practical subject

5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Leisure

5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Theory subject

8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Dinner, do relaxing activities

10 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Practical questions

11 p.m.

Sleep

Approach during the study leave:

·         Always combine maximum 2 or 3 subjects to be studied per day so that you don’t get burnt out with all the data.

·         The self-recordings of your theory subject can be utilised doing chores or even before you go to bed to help you retain it in your memory.

·         Keep 20 days each for revision of every subject (total of 160 days) and the remaining 20 days solely to do question papers.

·         Most importantly, make sure you eat well, sleep well and take care of your mental and physical well-being!

That’s about it! That is your planned out strategy to success. We sincerely hope you strive through the journey and keep soaring new heights! Good luck with your endeavour.
